Map of National Blue Ribbon Schools

While looking for National Blue Ribbon School Program winners, I quickly realized it was hard to find out exactly where they were located. The smallest geographical filter available on the award winners page was for State level. I contacted the NBRS program asking for a data set that I could plot on a map, but they didn’t have one available. So, I took it upon myself to plot the handful of National Blue Ribbon schools in Michigan as of 2017 into Google Maps. Here is the result, which is publicly available:

It is my hope that other people can contribute by adding the rest of the National Blue Ribbon school winners (there are over 500 of them this decade alone). If anyone wishes to contribute, please contact me to become an editor on this map.

One interesting note is that once plotted on a map, some simple analytics jump right out. For example, notice the high concentration of Blue Ribbon schools in high-income areas: Ann Arbor, Byron Center, and Oakland county. (Coincidentally, the NBRS chief technology officer requested that I take this post and map down, even though it was created with 100% publicly available information). Google Maps allows exporting geolocation data in KML format, so feel free to export this map to do your own analysis to find other interesting facts!
