I’m certified… again.

I was supposed to take a certification exam for my capstone class. It did not matter if I passed it or not -- I just had to take it to meet that graduation requirement. My original intent was to to take the GSEC exam, but it was too expensive, and I did not have time to prepare for it in just one semester. Besides, that certification is more or less intended for security administrators, and I am currently leaning more towards software engineering and databases. My second choice was a computer forensics exam, but as it turned out, there were no testing centers in Michigan. Of course, I didn't find that part out until a few weeks before the end of the semester! It would not have helped me anyway, as a new law in Michigan prohibits performing forensic examinations of computer equipment unless a special permission is obtained from the state (or working for a law enforcement agency).

Well, I procrastinated a little and finally signed up for another test the week before finals. I borrowed some exam prep materials from my teacher last Thursday, signed up for the CompTIA Network+ exam yesterday, and took the test today. I didn't really have time to study, except for going through the flash cards in the exam preparation kit this morning before the test. I wasn't expecting to pass -- I was just expecting to take the exam so I could get it done and over with. So, when I clicked "finish" on the computer screen, I was very surprised to see the phrase, "Congratualtions! You have passed the Network+ exam!"

I now have two CompTIA certifications: Security+ (which I obtained a couple of semesters back), and Network+. I am not sure if they will help me grow in my career, but at least they are taking space in the certifications section of my resume. :) I supposed only time will tell if possesing CompTIA certifications was ever worth it.
