Business on Ice?
Doing business in Yukon, Canada.
I have been reading about Yukon, Canada lately. It's right next to Alaska, so saying that it's freaking cold is probably an understatement. I read the average winter temperature is -14 C, while the average summer temperature is about 25 C. Despite the extreme temperatures, however, there are many plus sides to Yukon, and specifically Whitehorse:
- Wonderful scenery and wild life
- Rich cultural heritage
- Many incentive programs to move to Yukon
- Many incentive programs to start a business in Yukon
The only question is -- what type of business would work in Yukon? How could I start one? I read that there are already many IT companies up there, including software development and telecommunications firms. And considering the territory population is about 32,000 (about 75% of which reside in Whitehorse), the IT market might already be saturated.
Another possibility remains -- opening a firm that is located in Yukon and serves mainly Yukon residents, but that also serves clients worldwide. Since high-speed Internet is very accessible, opening an Internet-based business is definitely plausible. I guess I just need to come up with a very good business plan if I really want to start a firm in Yukon.
The other possibilities so far are Alberta and Ontario. In Ontario, the best places would include Toronto (where IT is very big), Kingston (where IT is needed to support education and government), and Ottawa (which would involve a focus on government contracts).
With so many business incentives and such attractive markets, what type of business could I open in Canada?
